How To: Draw a Woman's Face

Draw a Woman's Face

VCAD instructor Glen Kennedy introduces fundamental drawing techniques to encourage young artists to develop and hone their drawing skills.

Step 1: In Part 1 of the Video Series, Kennedy Starts by Sketching the Base Shape of a Woman's Face. The Structure of the Face Is Blocked Off into Sections So That the Artist Can Understand the Placement of the Ears, Nose, Eyes, Eyebrows, Mouth, and Hairline. As More Features Are Added onto the Face, a More 3-D Look Is Given to the Drawing.

Step 2: In Part 2 of the Video Series, the Features of the Face Are Continuously Exaggerated Using a Combination of Round Lines and Straight Lines. Details Such as the Iris of the Eye, Eyelashes, Eyebrows, and Nose Are Highlighted with a Darker Pencil.

Step 3: In Part 3 of the Video Series, Kennedy Encourages the Artist to Give His/Her Character Some Life by Adding More and More Detailed Features. Ears, Neck, Cheekbones, Hair Are Added to the Character's Style, and Are Based on the Artists' Imagination.

Step 4: In Part 4 of the Video Series, the Female Character Begins to Come to Life. Kennedy Starts to Incorporate Shading and Blending Techniques Using a Pencil and Eraser. He Encourages the Artist to Work Around the Face Slowly to Add More Dimension and Life-Like Features.

Step 5: In the last video of the series (Part 5), the final features of the female face complete the look of the character. Kennedy demonstrates how to fine tune details using strokes, shading, blending, and softening to the character's hair, eyes, neck, mouth and nose. The result is a 3-D, life-like drawing of a woman's face.
